We Cannot Read Their Newsletters. Here Is What We Can

Time for the section every vendor skips.

You want to see your competitor's emails. Of course you do. Their email programme is the one channel where they talk to the people who already bought, and it is completely invisible from the outside.

We cannot show you those emails.

The public archive we would read is behind bot protection. We get a 403 and a challenge page, every time, on every run. Our campaign count for that brand is zero, and rather than dress that up, we print the zero and say why.

I would honestly rather write that here than let you buy something and discover an empty inbox in week two.

Here is what we can actually see, which is less than you wanted and more than nothing.

Which email platform they run, detected from their own pages, down to the account identifier. On one brand: Klaviyo, confirmed, and specifically no Attentive and no Omnisend. That tells you their sophistication ceiling and roughly what they are paying.

How hard they ask. Where the signup form sits, how many appear, how fast the popup fires, what they offer for the address. A brand offering 15% for an email is running a different economics to one offering a PDF guide, and you can read the aggression of their acquisition strategy off the mechanics without seeing a single send.

And discount depth, wherever an offer appears publicly, tagged the same way across every source so the numbers are comparable.

That is "what email setup do they run", which is a smaller promise than "see their newsletters", and it happens to be true.

The proper fix is running, and it is delightfully low tech: a seed inbox. Real addresses, signed up to real lists, receiving real emails, forwarded into one mailbox we read. That chain is built and proven end to end.

What is missing is the last mile, which is doing the signups properly. Not just subscribing, but browsing products, adding to a basket and stopping at checkout, because otherwise you only ever receive the default segment and never see the abandoned cart flow, which is the sequence you actually wanted to read.

(We also learned that a catch-all address does not work. Two green confirmations from the host, and mail to non-existent addresses hard bounced anyway. Explicit forwards, one per brand, work fine and keep the mailbox clean.)

One thing to do next: sign up to your three closest competitors' lists from a personal address.

Add something to a basket and walk away. Then read what arrives over the next fortnight. It is the cheapest competitive research there is, and almost nobody does it.

Pick one competitor. See what we find.

Your first benchmark is free. One domain, measured against you, no card and no call.
