AI visibility

The Engines Disagree: 38% on Google, 0% on Perplexity

I used to think AI visibility was one number.

Like a rank. You are fourth, or you are twelfth, and that is that.

Then we measured a brand called Mack's.

They turn up in 38% of Google's AI Overviews for their category.

And in 0% of Perplexity's answers. Zero. None.

Same brand. Same week. Same questions.

The engines do not agree with each other, and that disagreement is the finding.

Here is how it works. We write fifteen or so questions a real buyer would actually type before spending money. Not "best earplugs". The awkward specific ones, the kind you type at 11pm when you have already decided to buy something and just want to know which one.

Then we put those questions to five answer engines and count who gets named.

Some results are blunt. AG1 shows up in 57% of the answers in its category. Grüns shows up in 13%. If you are Grüns, that is not a marketing opinion, that is a scoreboard.

Some results are stranger.

Braze got named in 37% of answers in its category. Klaviyo got 80%. Fine, you think, Klaviyo is winning.

Then you look at the sources the engines read before answering.

The single most cited domain, 59 times, was braze.com.

They are writing the material the engines read, and the engines are using it to recommend someone else.

That is a different problem from being invisible. Honestly, it is a worse one. Invisible you can fix with content. This one means your content is working beautifully, just not for you.

What we cannot tell you is why. We do not know Perplexity's ranking factors, and anybody who says they do is selling something. We do not produce a "visibility score" either, because a score would smuggle our own weighting in and pretend it was measurement.

We tell you which engine named whom, on which question, and which sources it read on the way there. You do the interpreting. You are better at it than a number is.

One thing to do next: pick the three questions your best customers ask you on a sales call, and go type them into Perplexity yourself. Right now, before you read anything else.

If your name is not in the answer, you already know more than you did this morning.

Pick one competitor. See what we find.

Your first benchmark is free. One domain, measured against you, no card and no call.
